Wellllll….. After a long break I’m going to attempt to keep up here again. Got an iPhone, so hope to be able to keep an eye on the net while not being tied to my desktop. Seems cool so far, but the blogging app could be WAY better.

Wow.  From out of the night, one of the most ingrained-in-my-soul ghosts from my past just appears.  Almost 8 years – light years, as the song goes. Overwhelming…..  Scheiße, kleine, woher hast die zeit gegangen…?   Good luck and happiness in all the adventures ahead.

This is about as appropriate a song as I can think of right now….

Private Rodger Young (Sung by Jim Reeves)

(I don’t want to mar the wonderful tribute above with any negativity, but I would like to mention that to me, almost all versions of this song sound too much like a dirge.  I much prefer Nelson Eddy’s almost “anthemic” version, a portion of which can be heard here:   Rodger Young–Biographical Note )

Remember the veterans who serve and have served – remember them today and every day.

Remember Rodger Young.

I was really, really inspired by Queen’s “39″ and the story hinted at behind the lyrics, so in the late 70’s I decided to become a Great Writer and write the story the song inspired in me. I was really excited about it, and then one day I finally got around to reading Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War and immediately gave up my writing career. he wrote the story I wanted to, but so much better than I ever could. But his was so much more – not just a relativistic love story, but one of the best war stories ever – an homage to the war-fighter while at the same time a total indictment of war in general – a soldier’s tale. It will always be near the top of my recommended must-read list.

So, after being pretty much bummed that someone should recently stoop low enough to grab the title for their own book <grrr>, I was SO VERY HAPPY to see this:
